Orange Belgium and Ericsson are proud to announce the successful completion of a 5G slicing automation pilot project. This project was funded by the FPS/SPF Economy as part of the Telecommunications to the next level-Initiative.
Orange worked with the for the project Service orchestration and backupEricsson solution. The two parties explored how to seamlessly set up and manage 5G network slices. These slices worked over both the core and the wireless network and are therefore usable for end customers.
Orange was able to easily create and manage slices tailored to the specific needs of large customers. Orange was also able to automate scalability. With the successful pilot, Orange is ready to reap more benefits from 5G. This allows the provider to offer slices to customers who have a demand for them. These are typically large parties, for example from the healthcare or manufacturing industries.
Network slicing is a unique capability of 5G. The technology makes it possible to have multiple virtual subnets, each with its own focus on a physical 5G network. This could be, for example, networks with guaranteed low latency for machine communication or stable, high throughput for remote control of drones.
Slices function as separate networks and are not subject to interference, for example due to the high usage of the 5G consumer network. In this respect, a 5G slice is a type of private network for certain customers.
In order to offer these slices, it is necessary to set them up smoothly and adapt them to the needs of the customer. Orange and Ericsson have now shown that something like this is possible on the Belgian network. The next step is to offer Slices as a product for organizations that need a private 5G connection with guaranteed quality.
Orange and Ericsson have previously worked together on 5G and slicing tests. For example, it was already possible to use two slices on one phone.
