LG was making interesting phones like the LG Wing. However, the company decided to leave the smartphone business in 2021. Meanwhile, its South Korean counterpart Samsung continues to dominate the smartphone business and is one of the world’s leading smartphone manufacturers. It looks like LG relied on Samsung to create the first AI phone designed for the AI era.
According to industry sources, Samsung and LG Uplus (a South Korean mobile network operator owned by LG) have signed an agreement for a smartphone project with artificial intelligence. The deal aims to develop the first “true AI phone” that “goes beyond integrating AI assistant services into a smartphone,” according to the report.
Earlier this month, LG Uplus launched an AI-powered call assistant called ‘ixi-O’. To give you some background on this service, it can answer phone calls on behalf of the user, summarize highlights, engage in messaging, and analyze ongoing conversations to detect potential phishing threats.
Since LG is no longer in the smartphone business, the AI-powered phone called “Galaxy ixi-O” will be created by Samsung exclusively for LG. As the name of the phone suggests, the AI phone will include both Samsung’s suite of AI features under the ‘Galaxy AI’ umbrella and LG Uplus’ ‘ixi-O’ AI capabilities.
“We expect the AI services provided by Ixi-O to be revolutionary when integrated into Samsung Galaxy’s built-in AI phones,” one of the sources said. The Galaxy ixi-O phone will remain exclusive to Korea and the LG Uplus network. However, the report states that Samsung can develop such artificial intelligence phones by collaborating with other mobile operators if they are interested.
