India’s Chandrayaan-2 aircraft maneuvered in September to avoid a close encounter with South Korea’s Danuri probe, according to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

ISRO experts said the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft changed its position on September 19 to avoid approaching Dhanuri, which was expected to happen in late September if the Indian spacecraft’s orbit had not changed. According to ISRO, the subsequent maneuver on October 1 also helped Chandrayaan-2 avoid a possible collision with NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO).

Such collision avoidance maneuvers are not uncommon in lunar orbit. The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), which operates Danuri, reported that 40 potential collisions between LRO, Chandrayaan-2 and Danuri have been avoided in the past year and a half alone.
