Microsoft has announced that Windows 11 will be available in public preview on the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S in December.
During the Microsoft Ignite event, Microsoft announced that it will bring the full functionality of Windows to Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S, TechCrunch reports.
3D applications
“Full functionality” in this case means that users can connect to a local PC or a cloud version of Windows via Windows 365. According to Microsoft, the virtual reality headset can be used as a multi-monitor system.
This virtual version of Windows also supports volumetric apps or 3D desktop applications. Developers can subscribe to access an API that allows them to create plugins for new or existing 3D Windows desktop applications.
The Meta Quest 3 was introduced last year and Meta released the Quest 3S in September of this year. The cheaper Meta Quest 3S has a significantly lower resolution than the Quest 3 and costs 329 euros for a headset with 128 GB of memory. For a Quest 3 with the same amount of memory you pay 539 euros.
It is not yet known when Windows will be generally available on both virtual reality headsets.
