Bloatware is hard to get rid of. When one goes, the other comes. Google Fit is now preparing to leave the house out the back door, and we might find ourselves instead another pre-installed Google app in our next Android handset, Fitbit.

The latest OPPO Find add it to your ROMs as a health and wellness app. OPPO chose to do this and I hope others will do the same.

Fitbit instead of Google Fit

Google acquired Fitbit in 2019, although the operation was not completed until two years later. Fitbit looked set to be swallowed by Google, but even though Fitbit’s online store has become Google’s, the Fitbit brand looks set to survive in the software space. Actually, even The app will come pre-installed in some future releases.

During Google is slowly getting rid of Google FitDue to APIs that will surely die next year, new Android phones are left “orphaned” by a pre-installed health app. This is where the Fitbit app comes into play. We are already encountering this in some new versions and in the coming months we will know whether this has become an isolated case or whether it is the norm. Google states that this is not mandatory:

As we continue to support the health and well-being of more consumers, the Fitbit app became available to Android OEMs earlier this year. Many device manufacturers have chosen to pre-install the app on their mobile devices.

Google’s statement already tells us that many manufacturers chose to include Fitbit among its pre-installed apps. The positive thing is that there won’t actually be any more applications, because the Fitbit app will occupy the position previously held by the Google Fit app. So one goes out, the other comes in.
