Review of the 155 mm self-propelled artillery installation AHS Krab

ACS Krab – Polish self-propelled howitzer mounted on a tracked chassis and has a turret arrangement. There is the power plant and control section in the front of the chassis, and the combat section in the middle and rear of the chassis. In this regard, the car is identical to the modern ACS of similar caliber: the British AS-90, the Korean K9 Thunder or the German PzH 2000.

The maximum speed of the ACS on asphalt roads is 67 km / h, on the flats – up to 30 km / h, off-road the maximum speed is reduced to 15 km / h.

Tactical and technical characteristics of Krab ACS:

  • Caliber – 155mm NATO
  • Barrel length – 52 caliber
  • Rate of fire – 6 shots per minute
  • Effective firing range – 30 km.
  • Maximum firing range – 40 km.
  • Charge – separate
  • Power reserve – 400 km
  • Top speed – 67 km / h
  • Average speed 30 km/h
  • Crew – 5 people
  • Weight – 48 tons

The power plant of this ACS is a German diesel engine MT 881 Ka-500. The main means of fire of the Polish howitzer is a 155 mm cannon with a barrel length of 52 caliber. The maximum rate of fire of the gun is 6 shots per minute. The current series of bullets – self-propelled, can fire 3 bullets in 10 seconds. At the same time, the practical rate of fire in combat conditions at which the crew can work effectively for a long time is 2 shots per minute.

AHS Krab electronic systems include:

  • ground navigation and topographic reference system FiN 3110L + GPS + odometer;
  • TOPAZ fire control system (tower control computer, guidance calculator and commander’s ballistic calculator);
  • FONET internal and external communication system (digital VHF radio type RRC 9311AP and personal radio station for functional personnel);
  • day and night surveillance devices of the driver and commander;
  • warning and self-defense system Obra-3 SSP-1;
  • direct aiming;
  • ballistic radar MVRS-700 SCD.

In addition to the main armament, the Krab ACS turret is equipped with a large-caliber 12.7-mm anti-aircraft machine gun and 81-mm smoke grenade launchers of 2 × 4 caliber. Howitzer ammunition consists of 40 shells, 29 of which are stored in the turret of the combat vehicle, and 11 – in the hull. The time to bring the ACS into combat position is about 30 seconds. Therefore, self-propelled howitzers have to change their position after the shot.
