In 2022, WhatsApp announced that it was working on a tool to convert audio files to text. The first signs of a test version appeared this summer, and now the function is actually being rolled out to all users. This feature allows users to convert voice messages into text. This can be useful in situations where there is a lot of background noise.
Currently the feature is only available in the following languages: English, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian. According to the company, this list will be expanded within a few months.

The company emphasizes the privacy security of this feature in a blog: “Transcripts are generated on your device so that no one else, not even WhatsApp, can hear or read your personal messages,” the company writes.
To get started with this feature, go to WhatsApp in the app Institutions > Chats > Transcripts of voice messages. Here you can then activate or deactivate the function and select the language of your transcripts. To transcribe a voice message, press and hold the message and tap Transcribe.
WhatsApp says the feature will be available worldwide in the coming weeks. Currently the feature works with a few select languages such as English, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian, but this list will be added in the coming months.
