Orsi, Mujica’s political heir, becomes President of Uruguay

Leftist Yamandu Orsi became Uruguay’s president-elect on Sunday, marking the return of former Frente Amplio president’s coalition. José “Pepe” Mujica came to power five years later.

Official election results showed Orsi with 49.7% support, compared with 46.1% for Alvaro Delgado of the ruling conservative coalition, with 94.4% of the tables counted.

Delgado admitted defeat in a public speech, and President Luis Lacalle Pou congratulated Orsi in a post on the social network X.

“I will be a president who calls again and again for national dialogue,” Orsi said in an address to his supporters. “I am going to be a president who will build a more integrated society, a more integrated country, where, moreover, even despite differences, no one can ever be left behind.”

Thousands of Front Amplio supporters in the capital Montevideo, whose residents have historically supported the left-wing coalition, gathered near a stage overlooking the city’s waterfront to celebrate.

Many waved coalition flags, encouraged by his return to the presidency. “We need to be more united to solve existing social problems,” said 52-year-old Yakelyn Valles.

Orsi, who promised a “modern left” political approach, received 43.9% of the vote in the first round of October for the Amplio Front, while Delgado received the support of 26.8% of voters. But Delgado also had the support of Colorado’s conservative party.

Orsi assured that he has no plans sudden change of policy in the country and seeks to create a “moderate left.”

The governments of Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Mexico congratulated Orsi shortly after the official results were released.

“I want to congratulate the Uruguayan people for holding democratic and peaceful elections and especially the elected President @OrsiYamanda, the Amplio Front and my friend Pepe Mujica for winning today’s competition,” said Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da. Silva on his social media account X.

For its part, the Argentine government of ultra-liberal President Javier Miley congratulated Orsi in a Ministry of Foreign Affairs publication in X magazine, where he expressed his “commitment to working together with Uruguay to strengthen the common agenda and well-being of both countries.”

Ruben Parada, a 44-year-old construction worker who lives in Montevideo, said he voted for Orsi because the Front Amplio is “close to the people, to the city, to the people who are most connected to the problem of not thinking like that.” many”.

Neither coalition has an absolute majority in the lower house after October elections, but Orsi’s Broad Front won 16 of the 30 Senate seats. Orsi said his majority in the Upper House would help him lead the next government.

The president-elect will take office on March 1. (Reuters).
