New research from the University of Waterloo shows that people’s penchant for simple explanations is closely related to their desire to perform tasks effectively.

“These results suggest that our bias towards simple explanations reflects how we evaluate actions,” says Claudia Sell, the study’s lead author and a doctoral candidate in developmental psychology at Waterloo. “Simplicity is valued not only in explanations; it is part of our thinking about presenting results effectively.”

Research methodology and results

Sell ​​collaborated on the research with developmental psychology professors Ori Friedman and Stephanie Denison. After conducting seven experiments with 2,820 participants, researchers found that people consistently preferred simple explanations and solutions to more complex ones, whether it was about understanding an outcome or achieving a goal.

Research has shown that people are more influenced by explanations that reference common and credible reasons. If the reason appeared rare or unreliable, it was perceived as less useful. In other words, the simpler and more reliable the reason, the more attractive it was in terms of both understanding the event and reaching results in the future.

The appeal of simplicity and reliability

“In fact, the more widespread and reliable a cause is, the more attractive it becomes both as an explanation and as a method of reaching conclusions,” says Sell. “Moreover, whether explaining reasons or seeking consequences, using fewer reasons seems faster and more efficient, indicating a common mental process underlying both choices.”

Overall, research findings indicate that effectiveness is valued in both explanations and goal attainment.

“Our research shows that people care about efficiency — the idea of ​​doing more with less — and that a focus on efficiency influences how people think about both descriptions and accomplishments,” Friedman said.
