Citymesh has conducted extensive testing with the Bolster project. This is a mobile 5G network for emergencies, built around a robust car.
Citymesh has carried out tests on the Belgian coast with its 5G car. These tests are part of the development of Bolster: a mobile communications system integrated into a rugged off-road vehicle. The vehicle can easily overcome difficult terrain such as sand and mud. The system sets up a 5G network on site using a telescopic antenna. According to Citymesh, the network can be operational within six minutes and has a range of more than two kilometers.
Various scenarios were simulated during the test, including real-time video streaming with drones and kite surfers. The system uses multiple frequency bands to support both broad coverage and specific applications such as video streaming.
Alternative to traditional infrastructure
According to Citymesh, the network provides a reliable communications link if traditional systems are damaged. Citymesh hopes that these properties will make Bolster valuable for defense and rescue services during disasters and other crisis situations, among others.
Bolster works autonomously, without human presence. The system can be used for various applications, such as drone surveillance and field hospital connectivity. Thanks to integrated technologies such as push-to-video and sensors, it is a complete solution for coordination and situational awareness.
Along with the defense
Citymesh sees future opportunities for expanding Bolster in collaboration with stakeholders such as disaster management and defense. The company continues to invest in technology to modernize emergency response and save lives in critical situations. Bolster is not intended for more classic crisis situations where, for example, simple network congestion is a problem. The 5G standard already offers a solution with network slicing. If this is not enough, the off-road vehicle can help.
