While watching a radar probe survey the Greenland ice sheet from a Gulfstream III aircraft, NASA researchers led by Chad Green discovered something buried in the ice.
“We were looking for an ice field and found Camp Century, but we didn’t know what we found at first,” said Alex Gardner, a cryosphere expert at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
Camp Century, known as the City Under the Ice, was a US Arctic military research base in Greenland that operated from 1959 to 1967. It was located 240 kilometers east of Tule air base. The settlement consisted of a series of tunnels with a total length of three kilometers and was powered by a nuclear reactor.
After the base was abandoned in 1967, the secret facility, which now lies at least 100 feet deep, was covered in snow and ice.
