search program Google for iOS is receiving an update that will change the way users interact with web pages. According to a report from 9to5Google, a new feature called “Page Annotations” is rolling out that will integrate search functions directly into web pages.

Page annotations define what Google considers “objects of interest” on a web page and highlight them as clickable links. When a user clicks on a featured asset, they are redirected to a search results page within the Google app itself, separated from the original web page, and a pop-up window opens. Essentially, this feature adds links to web pages that the website publisher did not add and without their permission.

This new feature has benefits and could change the way we consume web information. On the one hand, it can streamline the research process by allowing users to easily switch between web pages and search results without leaving the Google app. Additionally, it can provide a more targeted search, showing only the most relevant results for a particular asset.

However, there are also some potential disadvantages to consider. First, page annotations can lead users to spend more time in the Google app ecosystem and less time exploring the web. Additionally, there are concerns that Google may favor its own search results over search results from other providers.

To address potential issues, Google said website owners can disable page descriptions. However, the opt-out process can take up to 30 days, which means users will have access to this feature for an extended period of time.

It will be interesting to see how users and publishers or website owners react to this feature. With this new feature, Google walks the tightrope between innovation and user control. The success of page descriptions may depend on striking a balance that respects website design, user privacy, and the intended flow of information.
