Microsoft will extend Windows 11 Passkeys support to additional credential providers using the generic WebAuthn API. The feature is already being tested on the Insiders channel and is expected to be implemented in the stable channel in future updates.
Eliminating passwords as the primary method of digital authentication should be one of the top priorities of the technology industry. And that’s where a lot of data breaches and computer security issues come from. The Access keys or access codes in Spanish, are one of the methods that come as a replacement because they offer a a safer and more intuitive alternative.
Windows 11 Passkeys, more compatibility
Microsoft is working very well on this security feature. And we’re glad to say that when we find ourselves in another one of those times of unstable and buggy updates that reduce interest in the latest version of 24H2. It’s not all negative, and Build 22635.4515 (KB5046756), released for the Windows 11 Beta channel, contains a new feature that will eventually be important for expanding the implementation of access keys, as reported by the Windows Insider team: “We are releasing updates to the WebAuthn API to support the access key plug-in authentication model”.
Explained, credential providers like 1Password, Bitwarden and other administrators are joining the cause, and users will be able to choose between these providers or use a native Windows feature: “In the coming months, Windows customers will be able to choose a third-party provider as an additional option in addition to the native Windows access key provider, while maintaining the Windows Hello user experience.”.

Microsoft has too published the source code API WebAuthn (authentication credentials also known as FIDO credentials) help developers create your own plugins to support your own access key platforms.
Remember that passkeys offer a more secure and convenient alternative to passwords, as they allow you to use personal identification numbers (PINs) or biometric authentication, such as fingerprints or facial recognition, to sign in to websites and apps. with that significantly reduce the risk of data leakageas they provide protection against phishing attacks, prevent theft and unauthorized access.
As for Windows 11 Passkeys, they improve their operation and potential for use, able to work with all types of accounts, not just Microsoft IDs. AND We must congratulate the big tech companies for betting on a future without hateful slogans. Apple, Amazon or Google are others who support them. Use them whenever they are available!
