He Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahuannounced on Tuesday that the Security Cabinet had accepted the proposal for an agreement 60-day ceasefire in Lebanonbut that Israel would retain “freedom of action” if Hezbollah violated its commitments.
“The duration of the ceasefire will depend on what happens in Lebanon and we will maintain complete freedom of movement,” the prime minister said in his speech.
The security cabinet spent several hours discussing the terms of the agreement, and Netanyahu announced that he had voted for the US-proposed ceasefire in Lebanon.
The proposal includes three stages: truce followed by withdrawal of troops Lebanese Shiite forces Hezbollah north of the Litani River; a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon within 60 days and, finally, negotiations between Israel and Lebanon on the demarcation of their border, which is currently the border established by the UN after the 2006 war.
“In full understanding with the United States, we maintain complete freedom of military action. If Hezbollah violates the agreement and tries to arm itself, we will attack. If you are trying to upgrade your infrastructure terrorist We will attack near the border. If he launches a missile, if he digs a tunnel, if he brings a truck with missiles, we will attack,” Netanyahu said.
Military “freedom of action” in Lebanon was one of the most controversial elements of the agreement, strongly opposed by both the Lebanese government and Hezbollah, but Israel has demonstrated a willingness to accept a letter of commitment from Washington on the issue.
About critical voices about the deal, which include its partners in far right or to the mayors of northern communities who fear that security guarantees have not yet been put in place to allow evacuated residents to return to their homes, the prime minister promised that troops would re-enter Lebanon if necessary.
Netanyahu recalled that a year ago he had already signed a truce with Hamas in the Gaza Strip to free some hostages, but he had no doubts about “a new attack and a resumption of war.”
“Some say Hezbollah will remain silent for a year or two, get stronger, and then attack us. But Hezbollah will not only violate the ceasefire if it shoots at us, it will also do so when it tries to arm itself to attack us in the future. We will react harshly to every violation of yours,” he warned.
The prime minister indicated that now is the “right time” for a ceasefire in Lebanon for three reasons: focusing on the Iranian threat, a complete renewal of forces and isolating Hamas.
“From the second day of the war, Hamas He relied on Hezbollah to fight alongside him. And with Hezbollah out of the picture, Hamas is left alone in the campaign. “Our pressure on him will increase, and this will contribute to the sacred mission of freeing our hostages,” Netanyahu said. Loop.
Regarding the war in Lebanon, in which more than 3,500 Lebanese died, Netanyahu stated that he achieved his goals because he not only decapitated the organization (killing its entire leadership, including leader Hassan Nasrallah), but also forced it to retreat “thousands of years” after its destruction most of it arsenal of weapons and underground infrastructure.
“A few years ago this might have seemed like science fiction, but it’s not. “We have achieved this,” said the president, who said he strategically chose the moment to launch a military offensive in the north – parallel to the war in Gaza – and when to respond to Iran’s attack with 181 missiles in October.
