The French government is making a new attempt to take over part of Atos. Will Atos act this time?

Atos confirms in a press release that it has received a non-binding offer from the French government for the advanced computing activities. The offer amounts to at least 500 million euros, but could increase to 625 million euros if certain performance targets are achieved. The division achieved sales of 570 million euros in 2023.

It is not the first time that Atos has sat at the negotiating table with the French government. In the summer, Atos received an offer to take over cybersecurity activities in addition to advanced computing. Although an agreement could not be reached in time, the French government has not yet completely given up on Atos.

This time May 31, 2025 has been set as the final deadline. If an agreement is reached, Atos can expect an initial payment of 150 million euros.

Restructurings

The possible sale of part of the activities to the French government fits into the broader restructuring that Atos is carrying out. A long-term work. Atos has been in trouble for several years. The numbers are terrible and the company changes CEOs faster than the average football club changes coaches.

Not surprisingly, the French government is willing to keep Atos within its borders. Atos is a strategic IT partner of the government and therefore wants to avoid foreign interference at all costs. Atos’ Advanced Computing division covers all activities related to HPC, quantum computing and AI.

There are even plans in Parliament to fully nationalize Atos, although it seems unlikely the proposal will ever be adopted. Atos isn’t exactly thrilled about this. However, it is no secret that the company is urgently looking for money and then handing over part of the government activities could be an option. The company is also examining whether it can divest other activities.
