Qnap has pulled a software update for its NAS devices after it caused problems for users. Some users now have to manually reinstall their operating system, while others are having major problems and can’t even log in anymore.

Qnap has released an unstable version of its QTS operating system with QTS 5.2.2.2950 Build 20241114. Following user feedback, the NAS specialist withdrew this update and released a stable version online within 24 hours. However, for some users, the damage was already done.

Affected devices

The original update caused issues for the following TS-x53D and TS-x51 series devices: HS-453DX, TBS-453DX, TS-251D, TS-253D, TS-653D, TS-453D, TS-453Dmini, TS-451D and the TS-451D2. Several functions of the NAS would no longer work after installation.

Those affected can resolve the issues by manually reinstalling the repaired version of the NAS software. This can be done by downloading the update via the Qnap Download Center. Then navigate to system And Firmware update to get there Manual installation to choose.

Do not log in again

Unfortunately, this no longer seems to be an option for some other users. The Register reports that several customers are no longer able to log in to their NAS. You appear to have manually reset the device after experiencing issues with the new update. After this reset, your account information will no longer work.

Qnap itself advises that affected users should either install the updated update or contact customer support. However, users say that customer service is currently not very responsive. It is currently unclear what solution there is for those who can no longer log in.

Qnap users will have to endure a lot. The manufacturer is constantly struggling with bugs and vulnerabilities that criminals are only too happy to exploit. Patching quickly is usually the golden advice, but now it’s exactly this sensible practice that causes the biggest problems.
