Zoom is dropping the word “video” from its name and is now called Zoom Communications Inc. for life.

Zoom is changing the name of its Zoom Video Communications to Zoom Communication Inc. and dropping “video.” The company wants to emphasize that this is more than just video conferencing, which was their original motto. According to Zoom, more and more employees are returning to the office, which the video on their behalf no longer fully covers. They brand themselves as AI-first companies and try to compete with big tech giants like Goolge, Slack and Microsoft.

Zoom no longer wants to be known just for its videos as the current work environment continues to evolve towards the office. “We are an AI-first company that delivers modern, hybrid work solutions that enable you to collaborate seamlessly,” Zoom CEO Eric S. Yuan said in a blog post. For these simple reasons, Zoom is dropping the “video” part of its name and will henceforth call itself Zoom Communicatoins Inc..

Zoom has long been trying to assert itself among the big tech giants such as Google, Microsoft and Slack, which already offer video as a feature in their office suites. In addition, Zoom is also positioning itself more strongly as an AI-first company. “Our AI assistant, Zoom AI Companion, is the heartbeat of our evolution into an AI-first company and is critical to helping our customers discover new ways to be more productive,” said Yuan.
