US President-elect Donald Trump announced the appointment on Tuesday Jamison Greer as US Trade Representative, a key position from which he will guide the implementation of his tariff policies aimed at countries such as Canada, Mexico and China.

“I am thrilled to nominate Jamison Greer serve as United States Trade Representative,” Trump said in a statement.

The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), which Greer will lead, will play a decisive role along with the Ministry of Commerce in introducing taxes promised by Trump.

Greer, a lawyer specializing in international trade, was Chief of Staff to Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer during Trump’s first term.

During this period, Lighthizer oversaw the imposition of tariffs on China amid the trade war and revision of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC), which came into force in 2020, replacing the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

In his statement, Trump recalled that Greer ‘played a key role’ during his first term, imposing tariffs on China and other countries to combat “unfair trade practices”, and replace the “failed” NAFTA with T-MEC, in defense of American workers.

In this second term as US Trade Representative, holding a ministerial rank position equivalent to ambassador, Greer will become a central figure in implementing the trade policy of the elected president.

On Monday, Trump announced he would introduce 25% duty on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada, and an additional 10 percent tariff on Chinese products, which has already caused strong reactions in the three affected countries, major trading partners of the United States.

These Trump threats They could become a negotiation strategy. However, if implemented, these tariffs could have a significant impact on international trade, affecting global supply chains.

In addition to Trump’s tariffs, Greer likely to play leading role in USMCA review scheduled for 2026.

Trump, who has already chosen all the members of his cabinet, continues to appoint key figures to lower positions these days but equally strategically important to their political agenda.

On Tuesday evening also announced the appointment of Kevin A. Hassett as director of the White House National Economic Council, a key position in implementing his economic policies.

He also appointed John Phelan – Secretary of the NavyVince Haley as director of the White House Domestic Policy Council and Jay Bhattacharya as director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the government agency responsible for medical research.
