Former Argentine President Alberto Fernandez, accused of corruption over alleged irregularities in insurance contracts for state-owned companies during his time as head of the country, refused to answer

Former Argentine President Alberto Fernandez, accused of corruption over alleged irregularities in insurance contracts for state-owned companies during his time as head of the country, refused to answer questions from a judge in a federal court in Buenos Aires.

Fernandez, who described “Barbasad” accusationrefused to answer questions from judge Julian Ercolini and prosecutor Carlos Rivolo, although his lawyer Mariana Barbitta responded, according to the Clarín newspaper.

Amid the tension in the room, the former president denied any involvement in the matter and assured that the decree he signed obliging public companies to enter into contracts with Nación Seguros had put an end to “cartelization” in the country.

According to the researchers, the decree “prohibits the possibility of public tenders that promote competition and transparency”, but it means that from 2019 to 2024, more than 3.3 billion pesos were paid in commissions to intermediaries.

In total, 39 people are involved in the case. Fernández is accused of participating in “a scheme for the collection and distribution of public funds through the mismanagement of contracting and insurance brokering conducted by various government departments in Nación Seguros.”

The key to the case is the “brokering” of contracts by individuals and companies, which would mainly benefit Hector Martinez Sosa, who is close to the former president and was the husband of his secretary Maria Cantero. (Europe Press).
