Instead of a meeting link, the video calls integrate seamlessly into the chat experience. The new feature is only available within Google Workspace.

Organizations using Google Workspace will soon be able to create one heap Start in the chat window. If this sounds familiar, Slack has been doing this for a while and even Google used to have it in the now-defunct Google+.

You can start a huddle in the top right of a chat window. This will start an audio conversation with the other person. The button is also available in group conversations and Spaces. If there are multiple users, a chat bubble will appear in the message list indicating that a user has started a huddle.

You can turn on video or share your screen in the huddle at any time. Behind the scenes, Google Meet technology pulls all the strings.

Why have a huddle instead of a traditional video call like you always do now? Google says at 9to5Google: “Huddles integrate directly and smoothly into the chat experience. The size supports multitasking in chat as you can easily resize or share your screen.”

Huddles will be rolling out to these Google Workspace environments in the coming weeks:

  • Business Starter, Standard and Plus
  • Pursue Starter, Standard and Plus
  • Frontline Starter and standard
  • EssentialsEnterprise Essentials and Enterprise Essentials Plus
  • Non-profit organizations
