Amazon no longer has to worry about overdue taxes. The European Commission concludes the state aid procedure.

The European Commission today made a decision in the Amazon state aid case. The investigation dates back to 2017, when the Commission concluded that Luxembourg, where Amazon’s EU office is located, had given Amazon illegal tax advantages. The EU has now announced that it is terminating the state aid proceedings and that Amazon no longer has to pay back taxes.

Tax back payments

Nobody likes paying taxes, not even Amazon. In 2017, the European Commission revealed that Luxembourg had illegally granted €250 million in tax benefits to Amazon. The judges overturned the decision, the commission said in a press release. Apple recently performed less well and was fined 13 billion euros for an unfair tax advantage in Ireland;

However, there is less good news for Amazon. The European Commission is currently investigating Amazon under the Digital Markets Act to determine whether the online retailer is prioritizing its own-brand products on its online marketplace.
