Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada
On Monday, Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico until the countries crack down on drugs, especially fentanyl, and migrants crossing the border.
Both Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to the announcement by warning Trump that the tariffs would cause enormous damage to the region’s economies.
Canada’s prime minister met Wednesday evening with the heads of government of the country’s 11 provinces to outline a common strategy in the face of the threat from the US president-elect.
At that meeting, Trudeau stressed that “the number of migrants attempting to travel from Canada to the United States is only a fraction of those attempting to travel from Mexico to the United States,” his office said in a statement.
Canada’s strategy for now is to distance itself as much as possible from Mexico and emphasize that the United States’ northern border is secure to prevent Trump from following through on his threat to impose tariffs that economists warn would plunge the country into recession.
Likewise, officials in Mexico, Canada and China, as well as representatives of major industry groups, have warned that the high tariffs Trump has threatened will damage the economies of all countries involved, causing a surge in inflation and damaging labor markets. (Reuters and EFE)
