Belgian companies have access to faster broadband internet than the European average, although fiber connectivity lags behind in our country.
86.6 percent of Belgian SMEs have access to a broadband connection of at least 30 Mbit/s. At 63.9 percent of companies it is even 100 Mbit/s or more. This means that Belgian companies with ten to 249 employees perform slightly better than the European average. This is 84.9 percent and 59.5 percent respectively.
Even if we look at faster internet, Belgian SMEs still have an advantage. 32.7 percent have a connection between 100 Mbit/s and 500 Mbit/s and 20.1 percent even have a connection of between 500 Mbit/s and up to 1 Gbit/s. In the EU, these shares are on average 21.2 percent and 16 percent.
Only when it comes to super-fast Internet with a speed of more than 1 Gbit/s does the European average perform better: 11.1 percent of SMEs in our country have such a connection, compared to an average of 12.3 percent.
The figures show that Belgian companies have above-average internet connectivity. Most companies have a connection of 100 Mbit/s or more, which is sufficient for efficient work in the cloud.
Little fiber and 5G
It is not surprising that our country performs less well when it comes to connections above 1Gbps. Belgium has built up a strong coax infrastructure over the years. Such lines are sufficient for relatively fast connections, but fiber optics are required for connections above 1 Gbit/s. Belgium is lagging behind in this regard.
Our country ranks last in terms of fiber optic coverage to the branch or household. Only 25 percent of households in our country can have a fiber optic connection, while the European average is now 63.99 percent.
We are also lagging behind when it comes to mobile connectivity. We are the second worst students in the class; with 5G coverage for 40 percent of households. On average, 90 percent of households in Europe have access to a 5G network.
Although Belgium’s connectivity infrastructure is not yet state-of-the-art, our country still thrives on the benefits of previous generations of solutions. This means that Belgian companies can still surf faster than average today. Our country also performs above average when it comes to AI.
