AWS announced at the annual re:Invent conference that it aims to reduce the carbon footprint of its data centers by up to 99 percent.

AWS is integrating water cooling and more efficient power distribution to make its data centers four times more efficient than on-premises environments, SiliconANGLE reports.

Less space required

According to the cloud giant, both the new Trainium2 chips and Nvidia’s rack-scale AI supercomputing chip will benefit from the new cooling system. Water cooling would reduce energy consumption by up to 46 percent without the need for additional water. If no liquid is required, the system can also use air for cooling.

Additionally, AWS introduces a power distribution system with 20 percent fewer points of failure. By reducing the number of power conversions and moving backup power closer to the racks, overall energy consumption is dramatically reduced. AWS claims a new energy solution will increase power density sixfold within two years. In addition, AWS could generate 12 percent more computing power at each location.

The efficiency of data center designs is improved thanks to artificial intelligence (AI). AI will be integrated into a new control system for electrical and mechanical devices in its data centers, enabling real-time analysis.
