Windows 10 suddenly gained popularity

The Statcounter service continues to collect various statistical information, in particular about the level of distribution of operating systems on a global scale. According to the platform, more than 72% of computers worldwide used different versions of Windows in November this year. The most interesting part of the Statcounter report is that Windows 10 has become more popular compared to October. This fact is surprising because operating system support is expiring.

As of the end of November 2024, the share of Windows 10 among all versions of the Microsoft software platform increased to 61.83%, while a month ago this rate was equal to 60.95%. Windows 10 is almost ten years old, and next year official support for the operating system will end, after which Microsoft will stop releasing functional updates for it and it will be possible to get security patches for a separate fee. All this does not prevent the operating system from experiencing unexpected, albeit modest, growth.

Meanwhile, Windows 11’s share dropped from 35.58% in October to 34.94% in November. Interestingly, from May to October this year, Windows 11’s market share increased steadily from 27.67% to 35.58%. Windows 10’s share in this started to decrease in April and decreased from 68.34% to 60.95% in the period from May to October.

Note that Windows 7 is still used on millions of computers with Internet access. During the reporting period, the share of this operating system was 2.47%. As for older operating system versions, 0.31% of computers worldwide are still running Windows 8.1, 0.25% are running Windows XP, and 0.16% are running Windows 8.

As a reminder, the Statcounter service uses a counter installed on more than 1.5 million websites worldwide to collect statistical data. Statcounter developers claim that the service they created provides independent and objective data on trends in the use of various software products with Internet access.
