South Korean police opened investigation into the country’s President Yoon Seok Yeol, despite filing complaints against him for treason by declaring martial law on Tuesday, which was later lifted.

The investigation was entrusted to the security investigation team of the National Bureau of Investigation of the National Police Agency. after two complaints were filed, as detailed in a statement from a Yonhap local agency representative.

One of the complaints was filed by the opposition minority party Restoration Korea. the other was carried out by a group of 59 activists.

The complaints blame not only Yoon, but also also to former Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun, Army Chief of Staff General Park Ahn-soo and Interior Minister Lee Sang-min face treason and other charges for their roles in the declaration and subsequent lifting of martial law.

Former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, whose resignation took effect this Thursday, ordered troops to infiltrate the National Assembly and blocking lawmakers from entering the premises after martial law was declared on Tuesday, Vice Defense Minister Kim Seong-ho explained today.

Also on Wednesday, South Korea’s main opposition party, the Democratic Party (DP), announced its intention to vote on the motion to impeach President Yoon on Saturdayfor declaring martial law last Tuesday for obvious political reasons.

The announcement comes after the petition, signed by 191 opposition parliamentarians, was presented to the National Assembly.
