The trial version of Windows Recall appeared and disappeared. A recent, non-security preview is causing issues with the trial version of Recall.

For a moment, something finally seemed to be moving with Microsoft’s long-awaited Recall feature. A few days ago, Windows 11 testers who own a Copilot+ PC with Qualcomm Snapdragon tested it. But as always with Recall, a new problem arises.

Some Windows Insiders were unable to get the Recall Preview to work due to a non-security preview (KB5046740) released on November 21st. Microsoft now recommends users not install the preview update before joining the Dev Channel until the issue is resolved in a future update.

Come and go (quickly).

The Recall issue for test users occurs for users who have installed the preview update (KB5046740), seen the Recall feature appear, joined the Windows Insider Dev channel to get started with the code, only to do nothing with it afterwards.

Note from Microsoft: “We recommend that you do not install this preview update before joining the Dev Channel until we resolve the issue in a future update.”

Recall has been in planning at Microsoft for a long time. This feature regularly takes screenshots of your PC, allowing you to specifically search for information in these screenshots using an AI-powered search function. Of course, this quickly met with criticism because of its data protection nature. Many Windows 11 testers waited a long time for this test version to see what Microsoft did after the criticism, but will have to wait again for the next update.
