How long do we wait for a portable playstation? In my case I can confirm that more or less since the end of the cycle the life of the PS Vita, a console I enjoyed almost as much as its predecessor, the PSP. And it’s true that with the advent of smartphones, it seemed for a few years that portable consoles were a thing of the past, but luckily, in recent years, it has more than proven that this is not the case, and that portables have a lot of presence and also a lot of future.

Sony seems to have taken note of this reality, and according to the latest rumors, it would be working on a portable console that could be considered a lightweight version of the PlayStation 5. Leaked as a project in development, the device aims to offer a hybrid experience between a portable and desktop, albeit with some limitations that would set it apart from the original PS5. One of the most notable would be that games designed for PS5 may require specific modifications to run on this consolewhich would mean additional effort on the part of the developers.

Rumors also suggest that this new hardware would try to directly compete with devices like Steam Deck, ROG Allyand Microsoft’s future plans for its portable Xbox, which is scheduled to arrive in 2026, as we’ve already told you here. However, unlike those platforms, Sony’s console would be deeply integrated into the PlayStation ecosystem, which could be both an advantage and a limitation depending on the final specifications of the device.

Sony is working on a new portable PlayStation: the "lightweight" PS5

This is not the first time that rumors of this type have surfaced. Back in February, we talked about Sony’s possible Steam Deck rivaland months later, the idea of a portable PS4 was speculated, as we explore in this article. Everything indicates that the company has continued with this idea, although now with a more ambitious orientation, able to at least partially use the power of the current generation of consoles.

In any case, this project seems to be in line with Sony’s recent strategy, trying to expand its hardware ecosystem. An example of this is the recent launch of PlayStation Portal, a device that allows remote play from the PS5, albeit without functional independence. The new portable PlayStation console would represent a step further, offering native or hybrid gaming and positioning itself as a serious alternative in the portable gaming segment.

Of course, this is all based on rumors and leaks, so much remains to be confirmed. It is clear that Sony does not want to be left behind in a market that is experiencing a rebirth and where more and more gamers are looking for a combination of performance, portability and a good catalog of games. We’ll have to keep an eye on the company’s next moves to verify If this long-awaited portable console becomes a reality.
