Putin decided to provide asylum to Assad

The Kremlin said on Monday that President Vladimir Putin decided to provide asylum in Russia to Bashar al-Assad, who was overthrown as president of Syria as a result of a lightning offensive by the rebels.

Assad’s fall is a blow to Iran and Russia, which intervened in Syria’s 13-year civil war to try to consolidate their rule despite Western demands to keep him in power.

Russian news agencies on Sunday quoted an unnamed Kremlin source as saying Assad was in Moscow with his family.

“These decisions cannot be made without the head of state. “This is his decision,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, but did not specify Assad’s actions.

Assad’s departure eliminates the bastion from which Iran and Russia exercised their power in the Middle East. Assad’s father, Hafez al-Assad, sided with the Soviet Union to try to achieve parity with US-backed Israel.

The Kremlin said Syria subject to “extreme instability” and that it is too early to talk about the future of Russian bases in the country.

“We are conducting a dialogue with Ankara and other states in the region, including on Syrian issues,” Peskov said.
