New York prosecutors filed murder charges Luigi Mangione, suspected of killing a UnitedHealth executive in an attack that sparked a manhunt that culminated with his arrest in Pennsylvania on Monday morning.
The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, was detained in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a customer and an employee saw him eating at McDonald’s and thought he looked like a criminal, authorities said at a news conference.
When two police officers approached McDonald and asked him if he had been to New York recently, Mangione began to tremble and remained silent.
He was wearing a mask and sitting alone with a laptop and backpack.
Authorities released photographs of his transportation and prosecution.
Mangione comes from an influential real estate family in the Baltimore metropolitan area, tracing its ancestry to Sicily.
His grandfather Nick Mangione and grandmother Mary K. Mangione purchased Turf Valley Country Club in Ellicott City in the 1970s and created the golf course community.
The Mangione family also founded nursing home company Lorien Health Services. The family business also included ownership of a radio station, which broadcasts politically conservative programs.
In 1995, the Baltimore Sun wrote a story about Luigi Mangione’s grandfather, prominent local businessman and developer Nicholas Mangione Sr.
Luigi Mangione was named the Most Outstanding Student of the 2016 Class. Gilman Schoolan elite private institution founded in 1897.
