Former South Korean Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun was accused of playing a leading role in failed introduction of martial law On December 3, he attempted suicide in the pre-trial detention center.
A representative of the Ministry of Justice reported this to parliament.
The detained official was detained and is in a pre-trial detention cell, South Korean media reported.
On Sunday, prosecutors arrested the former defense minister Kim Yong–hyung for his alleged participation in the declaration of martial law, Yonhap news agency reported.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol on Dec. 3 granted the military sweeping emergency powers to root out what he called “anti-state forces” and obstructionist political opponents.
Six hours later, he revoked the decree after parliament defied military and police cordons and voted unanimously against the decree.
Amid the backlash, several military officials, including the acting defense secretary, said they would not implement any new orders to reinstate martial law.
The main opposition party, the Democratic Party, has called for Yoon’s powers to control the military to be stripped. The DP also demanded the arrest of Yoon and all military personnel involved in the martial law fiasco.
