Considering the panorama of the decision, the journalist noted that Trump’s message congratulating the next ambassador hides “A tone of condescension and very great imperialism.” However, he also calls on Johnson to end migrant crime and stop the flow of fentanyl into the United States.

He assured that Donald Trump’s style applies to Mexico and should not be read directly, since it hides some things, while highlighting the possibility that Johnson is going beyond his appropriate diplomatic role.

“This is Trump’s style, we shouldn’t read it so literally because we don’t know if he will wear the uniform of a DEA agent or another US federal agency instead of being an ambassador,” – Esquivel noted. This will raise legal and sovereignty issues because Mexico’s National Security Law requires foreign agents to report their activities to the Mexican government.

The journalist gave the example that if Trump’s threats of mass deportations or tariffs are implemented, the context of the ambassador’s relations in Mexico will play a more important role.

Esquivel questioned whether diplomatic relations would be transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum recently noted, or whether Ronald Johnson will take on a more interventionist role, this could mark a turn in bilateral relations between the United States and Mexico.

“He’s going to have a bigger role, and we have to be careful if he’s going to act like a White House diplomatic liaison, or like a spy, or like someone who’s going to interfere.” – he pointed out.
