Orange shows the price of the cheapest subscription from the subsidiary brand Hey! Bags, just hours after Digi launched.
In a press release, Orange Belgium announces new tariffs for its subsidiary brand Hey! a budget brand for consumers. The cheapest Mobile S subscription drops in price from 7 euros to 5 euros and now includes 15 GB of mobile data as well as unlimited calling and texting.
For the medium Mobile M subscription, the operator increases the data allowance from 10 GB to 25 GB and introduces unlimited calling and SMS. The price remains at nine euros per month. Nothing changes for the two most expensive formulas, Mobile L and Mobile XL.
Both the timing and pricing of the cheapest subscription come as no surprise. Orange’s announcement comes barely half a day after the official launch of Digi in Belgium, the fourth national operator in the Belgian telecommunications market. The Mobile S subscription from hey! is an exact copy of Digi’s mobile offering.
CEO Christopher Dujardin says in a response that the Hey! offering adapts to “changing market conditions and consumer needs.” There’s no mention of Digi, but the adjustments are a clear response to the arrival of the new player. In recent years, “changed market conditions” have been used primarily as an excuse for price increases rather than price decreases.
Digi is already causing nervousness in the Belgian telecommunications market. Proximus shares suffered a 7.5 percent drop on the stock market. A response from the purple camp and Telenet may not be long in coming.
Is there a risk of a price war on the Belgian telecommunications market? And what can we expect from Digi? We have carried out an extensive analysis.
