Apple will switch to its own Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules next year

As Bloomberg noted, citing knowledgeable sources, Apple’s efforts to create a vertically integrated supply chain of electronic components will not be limited to the development of its own modems. By next year, Broadcom plans to replace its controllers with its own solution for working with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless interfaces.

According to Bloomberg, Apple has been developing a unified controller for these interfaces for several years, but it will begin to be installed in serial products only in 2025. Like other components developed by Apple itself, the new chip for working with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will be produced by the Taiwanese company TSMC. This program of replacing Broadcom components with its own is being implemented by Apple regardless of the transition from Qualcomm modems to its own, but sooner or later the corresponding solutions will begin to be installed on various Apple devices simultaneously.

Switching to your own component base allows you to achieve more reliable software integration, as well as reduce the cost of components and increase energy efficiency. Apple is one of Broadcom’s biggest customers, providing the company with 20% of all revenue, so news that Apple was preparing to switch to its own Wi-Fi and Bluetooth controllers sent the supplier’s shares falling 3.9%. Apple’s own chips for a similar purpose could debut next year as part of the updated Apple TV and HomePod. They’ll also be included on the iPhone next year, and will arrive on the iPad and Mac as early as 2026.

In addition to cooperation in the field of creating server processors, Apple and Broadcom will continue their relationship through the supply of radio frequency filters for the initial need for modems. Before this, Apple tried creating wireless solutions for electronic devices such as AirPods and Apple Watch. But Apple’s own chip for more complex devices will offer support for Wi-Fi 6E networks, which are characterized by higher bandwidth and information transfer speed. Having its own components to work with wireless interfaces will allow Apple to achieve closer integration of its devices into the enterprise ecosystem.
