Google is at the center of another antitrust battle. Turkey’s competition authority fined the search giant 2.61 billion lira ($75 million) for violating competition law and abusing its dominant position in the ad server market.

According to the antitrust authority, the company owned by Alphabet made it difficult for its competitors by choosing its own service provider platform (SSP) over third parties. For reference: SSP is a software platform that publishers use to manage and sell ad inventory.

The company was given six months to offer third-party SSPs similar terms to its own services and to ensure competitors were not put at a disadvantage. Google told Reuters it plans to appeal the fine to Turkey’s competition authority.

“The decision by Turkish authorities does not take into account the intense competition in which ad buyers and sellers have many options,” a Google representative said in an email. he said.

Google’s latest legal troubles come shortly after India’s competition watchdog launched an investigation into the company over its gaming app policies. The Canadian Competition Bureau is also pursuing Alphabet, accusing its subsidiary of anti-competitive behavior and abusing its dominant position in online advertising.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) is reportedly planning to force Google to separate its search business to limit its monopoly. In another case, the Justice Department accused the company of violating antitrust laws regarding its online advertising business, dominating online ad sales through acquisitions, and allegedly influencing online advertising tools and creating barriers to customers’ use of its advertising tools.

Outside the US, the Italian AGCM launched an investigation into Google for misleading permit requests and possible flaws in the permit process. But not every story has been dark for Google. The search giant overturned the fine of 1.49 billion euros ($1.66 billion) previously imposed by the European Commission in 2019 for its practices in the digital advertising market. Source: Reuters
