The document estimates a “low-cost mission” would cost roughly $100 million to $300 million, excluding launch and mission costs. The cost of a “medium-range strategic mission” is estimated to be approximately $1-2 billion, excluding launch vehicle and mission operations costs.

As for the use of commercial services, the report notes that the joint exploration of Mars “It is essential to use new partnership models with international, commercial and academic communities”. The public-private partnership will be incorporated into NASA’s commercial COTS and commercial lunar payload delivery services (CLPS).

Returning to Mars, NASA emphasizes that the search for life on this planet remains an important undertaking.

“Potential oases for current life or the preservation of ancient life are likely to be found in areas that have historically been more difficult to access, – says the document. “For example, some of the most interesting landscapes on Mars are in the southern hemisphere, where the average surface altitude prevents robotic spacecraft from landing by conventional means.”

But the report hypothesizes that there are other places, such as underground (including caves, underground ice deposits, and volcanic environments), that provide potentially favorable conditions for life. “Where the right chemical and environmental conditions may have allowed life to establish.” At the same time, NASA recognizes that humanity today has a small window of opportunity to find life in situ on Mars.
