HDMI 2.2 standard will be released in January

A new version of the HDMI standard is expected to be announced at CES 2025 in January, according to information provided by the HDMI Licensing Administrator (HDMI LA) to some media. The standard will likely be called HDMI 2.2 and will offer higher bandwidth and higher resolution support compared to its predecessor.

It has been confirmed by HDMI Forum that the press conference will be held on January 6; Technical details about the new version of the standard are expected to be presented at the event. There is a version that future graphics cards of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 50 and AMD Radeon RX 8000 series will feature HDMI 2.2 support – both companies have scheduled press conferences for January 6. If approved, HDMI will no longer be inferior to the latest DisplayPort 2.1.

HDMI LA confirmed that the next-generation interface will support higher resolutions, refresh rates and improved signal quality; The cable may need to be updated to support the new standard. Currently, the latest HDMI 2.1b standard supports data transfer at speeds up to 48 Gbps, which corresponds to 8K resolution at 60 frames per second, but only with Display Stream Compression (DSC). An updated variant could eliminate the need for DSC or improve image quality by improving the implementation of this technology.
