After the outbreak of war in Ukraine, Russian intelligence services increased the number of hacker attacks against the United States, its allies and partners to gather intelligence and other valuable information.

This was stated in a report published by Microsoft on Wednesday under the heading “In defense of Ukraine: the first lessons of cyber warfare,” Ukrinform reported.

“The report reveals new insights into Russia’s efforts, including the rise in network hacking, as well as espionage activities against other governments, nonprofits, and other entities outside of Ukraine,” the document said.

It is stated that Russia’s efforts are partially based on a cyber strategy that includes at least three different and sometimes coordinated actions. These include “destructive cyberattacks in Ukraine, network intrusion and espionage outside of Ukraine, and cyber operations against people around the world”.

In addition, Microsoft’s report details Russia’s complex and large-scale operations aimed at undermining Western unity.

It is stated that the main target of Russian special services, especially outside Ukraine, is American organizations. At the same time, a total of 42 states were attacked in order to obtain valuable information about the war.

At the same time, Microsoft noted that it is difficult to assess the extent of the effects of Russian cyberespionage, as many customers store data on their systems rather than Microsoft’s cloud computing infrastructure.

The report reportedly presents the results of research conducted by Microsoft’s threat analysis team. These efforts aim to provide an insight into the landscape of challenges in cyberspace after Russia’s war against Ukraine.
