Colombian President Gustavo Petro arrived in the Mexican capital this Sunday to meet with President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) announced the arrival with a brief message in X, accompanied by two photographs showing the head of the department hugging and walking next to the Colombian President on the red carpet with an airplane in the background.

“This Sunday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, received at AIFA (Felipe Angeles International Airport) the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, who is visiting our country to meet tomorrow with President Claudia Sheinbaum,” the publication says.

The Colombian Presidency shared a video of Petro’s arrival on the same social media platform and indicated that the purpose of the visit was to “promote a bilateral agenda with President” Sheinbaum.

“We continue to strengthen the relationship between Colombia and Mexico,” he concluded in the message.

The video shows Petro and his daughters greeting Mexican officials and soldiers after landing at AIFA, located in the state of Mexico, on the outskirts of the capital.

Just a month ago, Latin American leaders held their second bilateral meeting at the G20 leaders’ summit in Brazil, where they highlighted the strength of the Mexico-Colombia relationship, based on cooperation, trade and deep cultural ties.

Peter previously attended Sheinbaum’s inauguration as Mexico’s first female president on October 1 and visited her at the National Palace.

As part of his visit, the Colombian president gave a masterful presentation in which he emphasized the importance of unity on the Latin American left in the face of global crises and noted that Sheinbaum had helped Colombia’s M-19 guerrillas years ago. “although “many people don’t like this story.”
