A teenage student killed a classmate and teacher at school in Wisconsin before police found a suspect dead at the scene of the latest U.S. campus shooting, authorities said.
Police have not publicly identified any victims at Abundant Life Christian School, a private school with about 400 students in preschool through 12th grade.
At least six other people were injured, police said. Two students suffered life-threatening injuries and four others suffered less serious injuries.
The shooter, who used a pistol in the attack and was a student at the school, was found dead inside the institution by agents who immediately entered the educational center. The shooter has not been officially identified by age or gender.
The media loves New York Times, ABC and other agencies say the attacker is a teenage student. She is identified as Natalie Rupnow, although she used the name Samantha.
The reasons for the attack are unknown at this time; authorities say it occurred at a location inside the school center. According to police, the attacker’s family cooperated with the investigation.
Authorities previously said the shooting killed five people, but later said that information was incorrect.
Madison Police Chief Sean Barnes, a former public school history teacher, said the shooting happened shortly before 11 a.m. local time.
“Today is a sad, sad day, not only for Madison, but for our entire country as another police chief is holding a press conference to talk about violence in our community,” Barnes told reporters.
“Every child, every person in this building is a victim and will always be a victim. “This type of injury doesn’t just go away,” he added.
Videos posted on social media from the scene showed a massive response from emergency services, including police cars, ambulances and firefighters.
There have been 322 school shootings in the U.S. this year, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database website. This is the second year with the highest number of shootings since 1966, surpassing only last year’s 349, according to the database.
Information about Reuters. The gender and identity of the victim are reported by NYT, ABC and several news outlets.
