Europe announces locations for seven AI factories. Unfortunately Belgium is not on the list.

The joint company EuroHPC has announced the locations where the first seven European AI factories will be built. Belgium is not on the list. The factories will be located in Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Spain and Sweden and are expected to be operational next year.

Supercomputer

Five of the selected countries – Finland, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and Sweden – will deploy new AI-optimized supercomputers. Spain chooses to modernize its existing EuroHPC system MareNostrum 5. In Greece, the AI factory will emerge from the DAEDALUS supercomputer currently being launched in that country.

The AI factories in Spain and Finland will also include an experimental platform. This platform provides advanced infrastructure for developing and testing AI models and applications. In addition, the platform must promote European cooperation in the field of AI.

Research and industry

The AI factories are part of the broader EuroHPC AI Factories initiative. The goal of this program is to create a network of interconnected AI hubs. These hubs act as central bases for AI startups, SMEs and researchers. You’ll gain access to AI-optimized high-performance computing (HPC) systems, training, and technical expertise.

The construction of the AI factories is the result of a joint effort by seventeen European countries. For this purpose, various consortia with participants from several countries come together.

The initiative is intended to enable groundbreaking AI research and applications. Industry will have access to advanced AI tools with applications in areas such as healthcare, energy and climate. The new AI infrastructure therefore helps to strengthen Europe’s technological position worldwide.
