Router manufacturer TP-Link is at risk of ending up on the US government’s blacklist. The routers pose a threat to national security because they are too vulnerable to cyberattacks.

Are TP-Link’s days numbered in the United States? According to the Wall Street Journal, several US government agencies are currently investigating the security of the Chinese brand’s routers. A ban on the sale of the routers is a possible next step.

Vulnerable to cyberattacks

Concerns about the security of TP-Link routers don’t come completely out of the blue. Microsoft revealed that its branded routers were used by Chinese hackers to attack Azure users for years. The fact that TP-Link itself is from China and has its headquarters in Shenzhen will not help the company in this matter.

The risks don’t always have to be so extreme. According to Wall Street Journal sources, U.S. authorities accuse TP-Link of “routinely providing customers with routers with security vulnerabilities.” As the final straw, TP-Link would not aggressively address these leaks and is not open to dialogue with security researchers.

TP-Link denies these allegations. In a response to the Wall Street Journal, the company said it was proactively looking for possible leaks in its products. “We welcome every opportunity to work with the US government to demonstrate our continued commitment,” said the confident spokesman.

Do you follow Huawei?

A ban could potentially come soon. The decision on the fate of TP-Link will rest with Donald Trump after his inauguration. Trump has not hesitated to ban Chinese companies in the past. It’s easy to draw parallels to the Huawei saga from five years ago.

TP-Link is a major player in the networking industry. The Chinese company is said to hold around 65 percent of the US consumer and SMB router market. TP-Link’s global market share is around 20 percent. It remains to be seen whether a possible American ban will also have consequences for the company in Europe.
