The European Commission gives the green light to Nvidia’s takeover of Run:AI and does not impose any additional conditions.
Nvidia is a big step closer to acquiring Run:AI. In April, Nvidia announced its intention to acquire the Israeli company for $700 million. The European Commission had given itself until today to examine the impact of the takeover on the AI industry. This investigation did not produce any worrying results, which is why the Commission gives the green light without imposing any additional conditions on Nvidia.
Orchestration
Run:AI specializes in infrastructure management. It built an open source platform on Kubernetes for AI orchestration. This platform enables “slicing” and dynamic distribution of available GPUs across workloads. Because demand for GPUs often exceeds supply, companies can increase the efficiency of available infrastructure.
Nvidia sees Run:AI as an interesting addition to its own DGX platform. The takeover reached the European Commission’s table at the request of the Italian market regulator. The European Commission’s ruling is that Nvidia “has neither the ability nor the incentive to hinder the compatibility of its GPUs with competitors’ software.”
American research
Nvidia responded with satisfaction to the EU’s decision and said in a statement that it welcomes RunAI with open arms. Although a big step has been taken, it is still too early to uncork the champagne. American regulators also have yet to have their say. And that’s no formality: There are currently two separate antitrust investigations underway in the US into Nvidia’s dominant position in the AI industry.
