The US Navy has allocated $537 million to build a third constellation-class frigate, dubbed the “fierce” submarine destroyer. The National Interest writes that its ships will be the main anti-submarine vehicle of the US Navy.
Constellation is based on the design of Franco-Italian frigates such as FREMM. The project was modified to meet the requirements of the US Navy. American frigates will receive a modified bow and a new propeller, which will reduce the acoustic visibility of the ship. Frigates will also have an elongated hull.
Constellation frigates are designed to hunt enemy submarines. Ships can operate independently in groups. Frigate guns can hit surface, underwater and air targets.
The US frigate will receive Enterprise Air Surveillance Radar (EASR), Aegis combat information and control system, and electronic warfare. The ship’s armament will include the Mk 41, which can carry artillery, as well as anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles.
