BepiColombo, a joint automated space mission of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), has captured a new photo of the planet Mercury.
According to Ukrinform, this was stated in a press release from ESA.
“The ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission captured this spectacular view of the geological landscape of Mercury on June 23, 2022, as a spacecraft passed by the planet to perform a gravitational maneuver,” the statement said.
The photograph was recorded at 12:49:22 Kyiv time, when the space probe was approximately 920 km from the surface of Mercury, by the Monitoring Camera 2 of the Mercury Transfer Module.
A few minutes before that, the probe managed to get as close as possible to Mercury from a distance of 200 km.
As reported by Ukrinform, researchers from the Carnegie Institution (USA) have recorded 2021 PH27, the fastest asteroid orbiting in space closer to the Sun than the planet Mercury.
