AMD FSR 2.0 is coming to the Xbox Dev Kit, the PS5 has been phased out for now

Just a few days ago, we saw that AMD FSR 2.0 had become an Open Source solution, and today we were able to confirm that this technology was implemented in Xbox development kits, which is very interesting news because it means that developers can create its games for the Xbox ecosystem, new and previous generations, and for the PC Integrating this image resizing technology from scratch.

However, I remind you that in short we are facing and Image scaling technology using spatial and temporal elements (previous images) to create a new image with a target resolution higher than the rendering resolution. So we can use it, for example, to reduce from 1440p to 2160p and even from 720p to 2160p.

At the moment, we don’t know what the developers have plans to implement FSR 2.0 on the Microsoft console, so we’ll have to wait and see how its adoption develops in the coming months. It is confirmed that the PS5 has been skipped, at least for now, because their development kits did not suffer the same fate as the Xbox and did not implement AMD FSR 2.0 technology. That may change in the future, but it’s not certain yet.

Why is the arrival of AMD FSR 2.0 in Xbox development kits important?

This is important because this image resizing technology could happen standard on which development will be unified for consoles and PCs and why could breathe new life into Microsoft consoles, especially the Xbox One X and Xbox Series X-Series S, which are designed to work with higher resolutions and for next-generation systems with ray tracing.

FSR 2.0 technology would significantly improve performance when working with a resolution higher than 1080p, and this could make a particularly big difference when moving in 4K, because the pixel reduction from upscaling would be greater. On the other hand, it would also improve performance when working with ray tracing, because, as some of our readers know, the total number of pixels greatly increases the load that this technology represents.

It’s not a complicated concept. the more pixels, the more rays and the more collision and intersection operations that need to be performed. By applying AMD FSR 2.0 rescaling, we reduce the total number of pixels and thus the workload. We’ve seen it on a PC before, and it’s no coincidence that in games like Cyberpunk 2077 or Dying Light for PS5 and Xbox Series X, it was necessary to reduce the resolution to 1080p when ray tracing is enabled.
