Lockheed Martin upgrades M270 jet systems to guided long-range missiles

Lockheed Martin is upgrading existing Army artillery systems for long-range guided multiple rocket launchers (GMLRS-ER).

Lockheed Martin, 1 weapons supplier to the Pentagon, has signed an agreement with the military to upgrade its multiple rocket launcher (MLRS). The modification included work on the modernization of the military MLRS M270 configuration M270A2.

The MLRS is a highly mobile automated system that launches surface-to-surface missiles from M270 family launch platforms. The MLRS (MLRS MFOM) family of ammunition can be launched in less than a minute by a crew of three.

The M270A2 is an upgraded version of the M270 tracked launcher with a common fire control system (CFCS); A new 600 hp engine, upgraded transmission and start modules, and improved armored cabins (IAC).

Upgrading the A2 configuration will allow firing 227mm long-range multiple rocket launcher (GMLRS-ER) missiles.
