The Russians need to do everything possible to prevent people from getting accurate information. However, the Ministry of Digital Transformation explained how it is possible to use the internet safely and completely even under occupation.

How do invaders restrict access to the internet?

When the Russians take control of a city, they demand that all providers switch to the invaders’ Internet traffic exchange points. He thinks they’re all the same Restrictions that already exist for residents of Russia:

  • there are no blocked Instagram, Facebook and other services on the territory of the attacker;
  • The entire unit is under the full control of the invaders’ special services.

If the provider refuses, he is threatened by the telecom company’s business and taken away.

How is the internet used in the occupied territories?

The Ministry of Finance noted that VPN services should be used for free access to all resources. They will also help protect against traffic and user tracking by Russian intelligence services.

It also removes any speed limits for a given area. For example, the speed of Twitter in Russia is very limited.

Why is the US investing in VPNs for Russians?

Since February 24, the US government has nearly doubled funding for VPN projects. This is needed to help the Russians overcome their media and social media blockades.

US officials believe that this way, they can provide accurate information to users in the attacking country. Therefore, the Kremlin’s propaganda will be less effective.

When this became known, the reaction of the Russian authorities was immediate. The State Duma noted that such actions are part of the information struggle against Russia.

Ukrainian media blocked in Russia

In March, it was learned that Roskomnadzor imposed restrictions on the use of a large number of Ukrainian media. Thus, they practically admitted that the Ukrainian information struggle is still effective.
