If the Qualcomm launch story is possible, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will potentially receive an announcement in the fourth quarter of 2022. Now, if you’re wondering when exactly the official unveiling will happen, the chipmaker may have left a big clue.
The Snapdragon Summit is an annual conference where Qualcomm showcases the latest technology it’s working on, including a single chipset that will power future Android flagships. For that matter, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is expected to appear on premium phones in 2023, and according to the chipmaker’s events page in San Diego, the Snapdragon summit will take place from November 14-17.
Given Qualcomm’s history, the flagship mobile SoC is usually announced on the first day of the Snapdragon Summit, which means the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 could be announced on November 14. Qualcomm’s phone partners such as Xiaomi are also expected to attend a conference where they can preview the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 series. In this case, these premium smartphones are likely to be called Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro.
We might also get a preview of the as yet unnamed Snapdragon 8cx 3 successor, though previous reports have identified this SoC as a competitor to the M1. Earlier, Qualcomm said that it will leverage the acquisition of Nuvia to improve the performance of its future chipset in an effort to take over the Apple M-series. From what we know about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Qualcomm is likely to follow TSMC’s 4nm architecture for mass-produced next-gen silicon.
It is said to start mass production of the Apple M2 Pro and M2 Max later this year using TSMC’s advanced 3nm technology, but it’s doubtful that Qualcomm will reap the benefits of this unit, at least until next year. Fortunately, thanks to what we’ve seen with the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 offers improved energy efficiency and increased productivity.
It may also be Qualcomm’s first SoC in recent years to feature an entirely new processor cluster, abandoning the “1+3+4” core configuration and switching to the “1+2+2+3” configuration instead. We can only speculate if this change will bring significant improvements, so as always we will wait for the actual results. Source
