5G has been called the latest communication technology that the world has seen and which is likely to replace the previous one, however, this migration process is not generated in a uniform way across the planet, but there are regions that are moving forward with others.

According to Ericsson’s Mobility Report, in the case of Latin America, only 7 countries have launched 5G networks commercially, but still continue to test its use in the rest of the region.

Given the above, the majority of citizens continue to use 4G technology, which accounted for two-thirds of the mobile plan by the end of last year.

According to the same report, although 5G is not widely introduced, data traffic has continued to grow as 4G coverage is gaining ground due to the constant use of smartphones subscribed to postpaid mobile plans.

What is the Latin American panorama about 5G technology

As already mentioned, Only 7 of the 33 Latin American countries have commercially running 5G networks, and 5 million of the region’s 630 million people have subscribed to these new networks. Although it is estimated that by 2027 this figure will reach 35% of all mobile subscriptions.

As for other communications networks, the fourth generation still dominates Latin America, which has also grown by more than 70 million new plans by the end of 2021, and the company says that figure will continue this year.

3G networks, which were once the most widely used, now reach 24% of subscribers, a figure that will continue to decline until it reaches 10% by 2027. In terms of 2G networks, they account for 8% of usage and are reduced. Up to 7% over the next 5 years.

All of this arises because of the migration of users to new technologies, providers are destroying previous networks to use the range in the new.

Overall picture

According to Ericsson, global data traffic on mobile networks has doubled in the last two years. In addition, 5G subscriptions increased by 70 million in the first quarter of this year and reached 620 million customers, although it is estimated that they will reach one billion by the end of 2022.

Chafik Nasif, CEO of LATAM North and Caribbean at Ericsson, assured that “Globally, there is a large-scale effort to make 5G adoption a reality. “This is a joint effort between governments, operators and companies, because we are confident that this work will translate into the economic capital and growth of many countries.”

In its 22nd edition, this report, which the company conducts annually, also indicates that global mobile network data traffic increased by 40% between the first quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022. Made with cell phones and larger purchases. High consumption of audiovisual content, which accounts for 69% of mobile data usage, also suggests that this trend will increase by another 10% by 2027.

This increase in the use of mobile networks was motivated by the greater circulation of telephones and the digitization of society and industries. The process, despite the state of health, has not stopped.
