5G has been called the latest communication technology that the world has seen and which is likely to replace the previous one, however, this migration process is not generated in a uniform way across the planet, but there are regions that are moving forward with others.

According to Ericsson’s Mobility Report, in the case of Latin America, only 7 countries have launched 5G networks commercially, but still continue to test its use in the rest of the region.

Given the above, the majority of citizens continue to use 4G technology, which accounted for two-thirds of the mobile plan by the end of last year.

According to the same report, although 5G is not widely introduced, data traffic has continued to grow as 4G coverage is gaining ground due to the constant use of smartphones subscribed to postpaid mobile plans.

What is the Latin American panorama about 5G technology

As already mentioned, Only 7 of the 33 Latin American countries have commercially running 5G networks, and 5 million of the region’s 630 million people have subscribed to these new networks. Although it is estimated that by 2027 this figure will reach 35% of all mobile subscriptions.

In its 22nd edition, this report, which the company conducts annually, also indicates that global mobile network data traffic increased by 40% between the first quarter of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022.
